The Institute of Basic Theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine

Our responsibilities

Established in April 1987, the Institute of Basic Theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) was originally part of the Basic Medical Sciences Division of the Shanghai Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The division was renamed the School of Basic Medical Sciences in October 1996, and further restructured in May 2023 into the School of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Today, the School of Traditional Chinese Medicine (Institute of Basic Theory of TCM) at Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (SHUTCM) functions as an integrated academic and research entity.

Guided by the motto “Diligently Seeking Ancient Wisdom, Broadly Adopting Diverse Methods, Strengthening Foundations, and Devoting Ourselves to Mentorship”, the Institute combines tradition and innovation to support talent cultivation and scholarly development.

Over the years, the Institute has been home to numerous influential scholars and physicians—including Jin Shoushan (金寿山), Liu Shunong (刘树农), Zhang Baino (张伯讷), Yin Pinzhi (殷品之), Qiu Peiran (裘沛然), Ling Yaoxing(凌耀星), Fu Weikang (傅维康), Duan Yishan (段逸山), Ke Xuefan (柯雪帆), Yan Shiyun (严世芸), Fei Zhaofu(费兆馥), and Wang Qingqi (王庆其)who have shaped its legacy and nurtured generations of TCM professionals.

As a core contributor to the “Double World-Class Project TCM discipline initiative, the Institute is responsible for four key disciplines designated by the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine: Basic Theory of TCM, TCM Diagnostics, Studies on the Inner Canon, and the Foundations of Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine. The Institute prioritizes the development of three flagship fieldsBasic Theory, Diagnostics, and Inner Canon Studieswhile fostering emerging disciplines such as Clinical Foundations of TCM and Formula Science through strategic talent and policy support.

It also hosts a number of specialized research units, including the Classical TCM Literature Office, the Informatization Laboratory of the Four Diagnostic Methods, and the TCM Information Science and Technology Research Center. Among them, the Shanghai Key Laboratory of Health Identification and Assessment plays a leading role in the standardization of TCM diagnostics by integrating modern technologies and multidisciplinary approaches. Research areas include objective data collection and syndrome modeling for diagnosis, the analysis of health and disease states, and the development and validation of diagnostic devices to support standardized clinical practices.
